Wachtend en hopend op een teken van leven, kwam het bericht van de dood van onze broer Victor.
Verdrietig laten wij u weten dat onverwacht en veel te vroeg is overleden Victor Karel Christiaan Venema, in de leeftijd van 51 jaar.

Sadly we let you know that Victor Karel Christaan Venema passed away unexpectedly and far too early, at the age of 51.

Sadly we let you know that Victor Karel Christaan Venema passed away unexpectedly and far too early, at the age of 51.
I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Victor. I first met him during the COST HOME project and from his initial involvement he became a leader in the homogenisation community. Always full of enthusiam for the topic and happy to share his knowledge with others. He will be very much missed by the community. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. RIP Victor

I knew him for almost 20 years.
It was always a pleasure to meet him during various events, joking or seriously discussing a science.
He will be missed - he made a lot for the homogenization community (unifying the community together, throughout the world).

I was so saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Victor. I had the privilege to meet Victor during the homogenization and statistics workshops. He was a lovely, kind man and a brilliant scientist. I remember lots of professional discussions and general talks with him. There is no doubt that Victor was one of the locomotives and the engine of the homogenization community. We will miss him.

Wat een verdrietig bericht. Ik was de begeleider van Victor tijdens zijn promotie aan de TU Delft. Dat was een mooie tijd, zo aan het begin van het wolkenonderzoek in Nederland. Victor was een zeer gedreven en betrokken onderzoeker, altijd in voor een mooie discussie. Ik was erg op hem gesteld geraakt. Ik wens de familie veel sterkte toe met dit verlies.

As many here I never met Victor, but I knew him as a friend and scientist. Knowing him, exchanging with him, brought happiness and knowledge. Not being able to share with him again is a distress. Deepest condolences to his family and colleagues

I have known Victor for a few years. He was an active member of the Working Group on Digital Tranformation of the Green Party in Bonn. Every other week we had a web meeting (and before Covid face-to-face), and Victor hardly ever missed one. He was most reliably there, brought in all kinds of inspiring ideas and was our voice on Mastodon. He was someone who made a difference. He didn't just talk about the importance of networking, he made a list of all the relevant digital groups in Bonn and got it online. He didn't just talk about free and open software, he taught us how to use these tools and was pushing them and the request for data souvereignty into politics.
He was most reliable, kind and had a good sense of humor. He pushed his topics forward for the benefit of all, and used his scientific skills and his great perseverance to bring them on.
I just learned about his death and I am still devastated. I miss him and will miss him for a long time to come. He was definitely one of the good guys! I am thankful and honoured, Victor, to have known you!!

I am missing Victor and consider myself lucky to have interacted with him. My condolences to his family. I met him on the internet as he was holding space, organizing, and contributing towards cooperative solutions for a more open and delightful scientific scholarship. My interactions with him were constructive and full of wit. I am inspired by his optimism and resolve.

Zojuist heb ik vernomen dat Victor is overleden. In de tijd dat ik me bezighield met open science ben ik benaderd door Victor om samen te werken, en hoewel dat uiteindelijk helaas toch niet uitkwam, kwam ik hem regelmatig online tegen. Op die manier heb ik gezien hoe hij zich onvermoeibaar inzette voor wat belangrijk is, iets wat ik altijd heb bewonderd.
Ik wilde graag delen hoe hij ook het leven van iemand die verder van hem af stond heeft geraakt, en wens iedereen sterkte met het verwerken van dit treurige verlies.

My condolences to the family. We had collaborated on and off down the years on multiple projects and ad hoc pieces, most recently last year supporting publication of a masters thesis. I will remember happy times such as when Victor held forth in a pub in Boulder on a range of topics. One of the good guys taken far far too soon from us all.

It was only a few years ago that the homogenization of climatological data became one of the topics of my interest and very quickly I recognized that Viktor Venema is a name that is inevitable to quote. Very sad news to learn about Victor's passing. Victor has been an authoritative voice in the homogenization community and his views and novel approaches have contributed greatly to the progress in this field. There was still so much work for him to do. Victor will be greatly missed.

We met Victor in June 2006. It was a homogenization seminar. He attended almost randmly and as soon as he made his presentation, we realized we needed him for our project (COST HOME). He engaged and mastered the topic, he became a leading character. For his knowledge and for his extreme kindness.
We found each other repeated times through the years, in conferences, worksops or even short stays. He visited a couple times my home and was always a nice guy to have around.
